Description

Plague Court was a large, gloomy house in Holborn, supposed to be haunted by the ghost of Louis Playge, an unpleasant man, who had held the post of hangman’s assistant in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Nearly three hundred years later, in a locked and apparently impenetrable room, murder was committed. A fanatical spiritualist was stabbed while invoking the spirits of the dead; and the few clues that were left behind seemed to prove that no living person could have been responsible. Sir Henry Merrivale, unconventional head of the M.I.D., who enjoyed sleep and trashy novels and resented any kind of intrusion on his privacy, for once showed interest and stirred himself to go out and solve this frightening and very baffling ‘supernatural’ crime.
